The total cost for a 3-ton geothermal retrofit is approximately $30,000. Applying the 26-percent Federal tax credit reduces the cost by $7,800 to $22,200. Maryland has a tax credit of up to $1,000 for residential geothermal installations and up to $7,000 for commercial geothermal heat pump installations; thus, bringing the cost down for residential geothermal installations to $21,200. Furthermore, Maryland counties such as Anne Arundel County have a $2,500 property tax credit which reduce the effective cost to $18,700.
